About London
London is situated in southeastern England and for centuries has been the largest and most populated city. Established by the Romans in the 1st century AD, the metropolis has also been ruled by the Vikings, Saxons, Danes, and finally the British. Plagues, epidemics and a fire in the 17th that damaged numerous areas of the city have beset the population. London flourished in spite of the tribulations. Overcrowded roads led to the development of the railroad in the 19th century. The continuously growing industries led to the Clean Air Act of 1956. The architecture ranges from medieval times to modern abstracts. The Palace of Westminster and the Jewel Tower are two of the oldest buildings in London. The palace suffered substantial damage during the London fire, but the redesigned structure houses Big Ben, the most famous clock in the world. Royal history and its palaces welcome guests daily from Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace to Queen Elizabeth’s Windsor Castle. Guests may tour the Royal Mews, which houses the queen’s elaborate coaches and horses. The Kensington and Kew Palaces housed royal families of the past, but presently contain the same rich décor and chronicles of the times. Witness the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, one of the present queen’s homes.
The Tower of London was the palace where many executions took place and the structure is believed to be haunted. Visitors can view the crown jewels and the displays of armour while hearing tales of the tower’s dark past. The easily recognizable Tower Bridge is in proximity to the palace. Guests can view evidence of the Roman culture from the wall that used to surround the city to the original location of the London Bridge. The British Museum of History houses exhibits dating from the prehistoric to the present including sculptures from the famous Parthenon.
Visitors can visit the London that noted authors William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle referenced in their works. Tours are also available highlighting where these famous men worked and lived. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre continues to provide performances of the bard’s plays. Madame Tussaud’s wax museum amazes people daily with life-like images of famous people past and present. One of the more recent innovations in the city is the London Eye. The massive ferris wheel like structure allows individuals to board capsules that rotate and provide spectacular views of the city.
